The problem with Alexandria for me, and for many people, is that it’s personally unsafe to travel there in a way that few reasonable venues are. For example, the Department of States warns that “unescorted women are vulnerable to sexual harassment and verbal abuse.” Abuses of gay and lesbian individuals are well-documented.

This isn’t just about principles, it’s about safety. I won’t be going to Alexandria because I don’t feel safe that I’d be coming home if I did.
