Hooters Beijing
Hooter’s in Beijing was putting up their signs this week.
Definitive proof that we live in a globe-alized world (apologies to Tom Friedman).

Interesting allusion to revolutionary art.

What is the Chinese name for the restaurant? The translation:
American Owl Restaurant (or literally, American Cat Head Eagle Restaurant)
I think the meaning is completely lost.

Opening soon, just northeast of Worker’s Stadium.

[…] I found this interesting link, this Andrew guy is dissecting the Chinese name (I also took a picture of it) . Come on guys… “American Owl (or ‘Cat Head Eagle’) Restaurant”? Can we not come up with a better name? Like “美国大乳房餐厅”, or American (da rufang) Restaurant”? (I’m not going to translate da rufang, but you can guess what I wrote). The name Owl Restaurant really, as Andrew points out, looses it’s meaning. My proposed name is much better. Hey Andrew!
I had the misfortune of showing up on opening night to Hooters. I did a little video:

“Cat Head” has a rather unfortunate meaning in locker room parlance, and I’d rather not go into it here.
But, if you thikn about it, the mention of “cat” in the name does evoke some of the original meaning of the restaurant…though the meaning is not quite ascribed directly.
“Why must I be like that/ Why must I chase the cat? Nothing but the dog in me…”

As much as I like to see all-American restaurants settling in foreign countries, I am curious to understand their hiring policy in China.
I live in Clearwater, FL, Hooters’ birth cradle, and overthere, the main attraction of Hooters is dwarfed by Jugs & Mugs’, and Quaker Steak & Lube’s booby chicks.
China is not known to be a big-boob chick country. So?
